Should Jersey follow Guernsey’s example and have a debate on Assisted Dying?

Tuesday, April 10, 2018

Guernsey are likely to take the lead on this issue. It is all about freedom of personal choice.

The wealthy already have this choice in going to Switzerland where doctors participate in the practice of Assisted Dying. We should be compassionate and humane in our treatment of the terminally suffering - who must be allowed to make these choices for themselves.

This is a dignity issue. Though it is hugely complex both morally and legally but our sister island Guernsey is brave enough to have this conversation on end of life care. Whichever side of the moral argument you support the fact that we are free to have this debate is why small jurisdictions can sometimes be world leaders on crucial issues if they are brave enough.
